Featuring chair, The Honourable Justice Robert Spence, Ontario Court of Justice, and speakers Shuah Roskies, Office of the Children’s Lawyer, Patrick Senson, Family Law Lawyer (now with the Office of the Children’s Lawyer), and Chithika Withanage, Children’s Aid Society of Toronto.\
The following topics will be explored:
- Let’s begin with the Preamble
- Expanded protection services for youth aged 16 and 17 years of age
- Best Interests test and the voice of the child
- Changes to Access Orders for Crown Wards (Extended society care)
- Recognition of the unique position and rights for First Nations, Inuit and Metis children
- Changing terms under the Child and Youth Family Services Act

FAMILY AND CHILD PROTECTION LAW AND THE CHARTER
Featuring Chair Justice William Sullivan and speakers Tammy Law, Barrister and Solicitor, Robert Shawyer, Shawyer Family Law, and Cathy Tempesta, Office of the Children’s Lawyer.
This program will provide an essential overview and discussion of Charter issues in child protection and family law. The panelists above have all been involved in leading Charter cases in both child protection and family law, including securing state funding for unrepresented litigants under section 7 of the Charter and the constitutionality of section 31 of the Family Law Act. Practice tips on how and when to raise Charter issues, including procedures and notices will be explained.
