You have submitted your account to LAO and requested discretion and the Legal Accounts Officer has cut your account. You have written your appeal letter to LAO and your discretion request has been disallowed. Your next avenue of appeal is an appeal to an Assessment Officer as to how LAO has exercised their discretion. This is not an assessment of your account in the traditional sense. Rather it is a hearing before an Assessment Officer as to how LAO exercised their discretion. The documents available here for download are precedent materials for the hearing. The FLA is encouraging all its members and the family bar at large to appeal LAO’s decisions on their accounts.
Updated judicial Schedules are now available for 47 Sheppard. If you would like a copy, please contact Lauren B. Israel (). A further update will be sent in April 2014. Please be advised that all dates are subject to change without notice. Any proposed adjournment dates agreed to by counsel are subject to the judge’s availability, as dates are closed when they become fully booked.
A few newsletters ago we asked you to send us your LAO horror stories. Thanks to those of you who wrote to us! We would like to continue to receive those stories and to that end, please see the note from Co-Chair, Jean Hyndman attached. Stories should be sent to Jean Hyndman at

UNDERSTANDING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Monday, October 5, 2015
Justice Ellen Murray has agreed to chair this session. There is no question that an allegation of domestic violence complicates the handling of a family law file. Come share in the discussion and learn more about: how to screen a file for domestic violence; how to assess the risk involved in a specific allegation of domestic violence; how to adjust your advocacy in the face of such allegations, (whether your client is the alleged victim or the alleged perpetrator); and how to work with criminal counsel when your client faces criminal charges.
